Newsletter Archive

This digital collection of newsletters spans the different iterations of the American Cheese Society's member newsletter. Spanning from 1995 to the present, these newsletters serve as the main communication tool between the organization and our members. This archive encompasses our member business developments, organizational growth, advocacy advancements for the artisan cheese industry with state and federal government agencies, and educational opportunities for members. These newsletters also feature a wealth of recipes from the member base, larger publications, and staff members using cheese as the highlighted ingredient.

What’s Inside the Collection?

There are 175+ newsletters that date from 1990. The newsletter has changed names, formats, and publication cycle over time. The three variations have been The American Cheese Society Newsletter, CheeseBytes, and the Traditional Cheese Advocate.

The American Cheese Society Newsletter was first published and sent to members every two months beginning in 1990. The newsletter moved to Quarterly publication in 1995. Every newsletter has members of the American Cheese Society as contributing authors are. The second quarter usually contains the event program for the upcoming conference and the third quarter of each year usually contains the Annual Conference Judging and Competition Winners as well as a conference review. In 1995, a section titled ‘Meet the Members’ begun and would describe members based on their region of the country. The Great American Cheese Week was established in 1997 with a special announcement made to members through the newsletter. In 2002, the issues were themed by region and highlighted different cheeses made there. Starting in 2007 the issues were printed in color. Paper copies have been digitized and are in PDF format. They are text searchable and have read-out-loud capabilities.

CheeseBytes was the first digital newsletter sent by email from the American Cheese Society beginning in March of 2010. The newsletters became shorter but were sent every month with up to date information for members about regulations, advancements within the industry, peer’s accomplishments, and general news about the industry. With the change within the Society from being run by volunteers to establishing a dedicated staff, the newsletter reflected the push forward. A message from the President as well as Executive Director became standard. In 2010, a column titled ‘Member of the Month’ was introduced. In 2011, ‘Ask Dr. Cheese’ was established. October of 2011 was the expansion of National Cheese Week to National Cheese Month. In 2016, a feature titled “The Cultured Kitchen” focused on recipes developed by ACS with a focus on cooking with American cheeses.  June newsletters usually contain tips for attending conference or sending cheese to the Judging and Competition. The August and September newsletters contain reflections of the year’s annual conference as well as the introduction of new Presidents.

The Traditional Cheese Advocate can be found within this archive and is listed separately from CheeseBytes. The Traditional Cheese Advocate was first published quarterly in 2016 and is a highlight of traditional cheesemaking safety and advancement in the artisan cheese industry.

What’s Inside the Newsletters?

Each newsletter has a message from Leadership with an update of the organization. The newsletters cover the various topics and issues and are never static reiterations of the following month. Since these reflect the current moment, no issue is the same, but there are reoccurring topics, including Health, Regulations, Food Safety, Operations, Cheese History, Definitions
Categorization, Milk, Cheesemaking, Ripening, Assessment and Evaluation, Selling, Transporting, Inventory Management, Service, Business Principles and Practices.
